DYA characteristics

Why DYA?

DYA® is a tried-and-tested set of best practices that can support you in the realisation of an effective architectural function within your organisation. A large number of organisations in the Netherlands and beyond use (parts of) DYA when working within an architectural structure. It is almost certain that DYA can also offer useful starting points and instruments for your organisation.

The value of architecture

Architecture is an important business function that ensures coherence and integration in your business and IT. Past experience shows that addressing issues on an incidental basis leads to suboptimal performance. For example, many organisations build different systems for similar issues. The result is that they are left with a patchwork of systems, which is expensive to manage and maintain and very difficult to adapt to new conditions. By creating coherence and structure, architecture is an ideal means for developing a more effective and efficient business and IT with systems that are tailored to these activities. Organisations that have worked consistently within an architectural context for a long period of time are now able to reap the rewards. A good example is a dutch pensionfund, which was able to reduce its IT costs by tens of percent and which has furthermore become far more responsive as an organisation.
In concrete terms, architecture is developed on the basis of principles and models that guide the design and realisation of business processes, organisational structure, the information management and systems and an organisation’s technical infrastructure. This can be done at the level of the entire organisation (referred to as enterprise architecture), a unit within the organisation (domain architecture) or at the project level (project start architecture).

DYA Vision

At Sogeti, we believe that architecture’s success within an organisation is heavily dependent on the maturity of the architectural function. This does not come down to drawing up attractive architectural descriptions, but to ensuring that the principles and models underlying the architecture are supported and successfully implemented within the organisation. In this context, the process for arriving at a specific architecture is more important than the architecture itself! This philosophy forms the foundation of DYA, Sogeti’s approach to architecture. Over the years, DYA has grown into the de-facto standard for the architectural process in the Netherlands.

DYA and other methods/applications

A variety of frameworks, methods and techniques are available for architecture, such as ArchiMate, IAF, TOGAF, Zachman and numerous other examples. The bottom line for the individual organisation is that it develops an architectural function that fits within its specific organisational structure and culture. This requires a tailored approach. After all, one cannot expect the rest of the organisation to simply adapt to the architectural function. Indeed, it needs to be the other way round: the architectural function needs to be adapted to existing procedures and decision-making processes. DYA ties in seamlessly with this concept.
DYA includes a variety of best practices that enable you to fully incorporate your architectural function within your organisation. In addition, you will have no trouble implementing a variety of methods and techniques side by side. For example, there are a number of organisations that use DYA in tandem with ArchiMate and TOGAF. ArchiMate serves as the enterprise architecture modelling language, TOGAF as the architectural design process and DYA as a framework that allows projects to run within an architectural structure via the project start architecture (PSA). Finally, it is a good idea to consistently adhere to the DYA principles when structuring and professionalising your architectural function.

DYA freely available

Although DYA is the intellectual property of Sogeti, it is freely available to other organisations in the form of books and papers. The implementation of DYA is not subject to any conditions or charges other than that DYA is referred to as a registered trademark of Sogeti.
Of course, to effectively implement DYA, you will first need to have a good understanding of the nature of DYA and what you can do with it. This insight can be obtained by studying the books and papers, by following a training or coaching programme or by involving Sogeti in the structuring and professionalisation of your architectural function.
The benefits of using DYA are considerable. The DYA best practices can help you to ensure that your architectural function performs correctly and effectively from the start and to avoid pitfalls.
